Football Key Numbers: Why 3 and 7 Win or Lose Bets

A field goal is worth three points. A touchdown with the extra point is worth seven. Football scores in those chunks, so the gap between two teams at the final whistle settles on 3 and 7 far more than on any other number. That one fact is what key numbers in football betting are built on, and it quietly decides more wagers than most people who bet on games ever notice.

If you have ever lost a point spread bet by half a point, you have already met a key number. This is the corner of betting where a tiny difference on the ticket turns into the whole result.

What key numbers in football betting really are

A key number is a final margin that shows up far more often than the numbers around it. In the NFL the big ones are 3 and 7, followed by 6, then 10, 4, and 14. They cluster there because of how points get scored. Threes come from field goals. Sevens come from a touchdown plus the extra point. Stack a couple of those together and you get the common results: 3, 7, 10, 14.

The numbers between them stay rare. A game seldom ends with a margin of 5 or 11, because there is no clean, common way to build those scores. So the spread does not treat every number the same, and neither should you.

Why 3 sits at the top

Across every NFL game since 2015, WalterFootball's margin data shows more than one in seven games landing on exactly 3 points. Seven is next, then 6. Even 14 turns up more often than the small numbers do. Add up 3, 7, 6, 10, 4, and 14 and you have covered north of 40% of every decided game, per a long-run sample from TheLines. Six numbers, and they own most of the outcomes.

The lesson is plain. When a line sits on or near 3, the exact side you are on matters far more than a bare half-point suggests.

What crossing a key number costs

Take a favorite laid at -3.5. Close to one game in seven ends on a 3-point margin, and the ones that decide this bet are the games where the favorite is the side winning by exactly 3. All of them lose at -3.5 and win at -2.5. Over a season that half-point swings more tickets than any other on the board.

The same math flips for the underdog. A team getting +3.5 turns those 3-point losses into wins. A team getting only +2.5 eats them. When you shop a spread, the move from 2.5 to 3.5 across the number is worth far more than the move from 8.5 to 9.5, where almost nothing lands.

Buying points on and off a key number

Most books let you buy half a point by paying more juice. (Juice is the built-in cut the book charges on every bet.) Off an ordinary number that costs about 10 cents. Off a key number the price jumps. Moving a -3.5 favorite down to -3 often runs around -130 instead of -110, because the book knows it is handing you every 3-point push.

Buying is worth it only around the right numbers. Buying onto 3 or onto 7 can be defensible when the price is fair, since you gain the single most valuable half-point on the board. Buying half a point anywhere else is usually a slow leak. Paying -130 to shave a number that almost never hits just donates the extra juice.

The real edge is shopping the number

Books do not post identical spreads. One might hang a game at -3 while another sits at -2.5 or -3.5 on the same team, especially early in the week before the market firms up. Watching a line drift onto or off 3 is one of the clearest signals out there, and our line movement guide walks through how to read it. Grabbing +3 instead of +2.5, or -2.5 instead of -3, is free value that costs nothing but the effort of checking more than one book.

This is line shopping in its purest form. Over a season, consistently landing on the better side of 3 and 7 is worth more than most bettors' handicapping. Checking every book by hand is tedious, which is where a tool earns its keep. BetSuite watches the same game across the books in its lineup and flags when one hangs a softer number than the rest, so a half-point on the right side of a key number does not slip past you.

Teasers and middles live here too

Key numbers are the whole reason teasers exist. A standard 6-point teaser moves a football spread through both 3 and 7, the two fattest numbers on the board, which is why teasing a +1.5 up to +7.5 or a -7.5 down to -1.5 is the classic play. Our NFL teaser strategy breaks down which legs actually clear the math.

Middling works off the same clustering. Back a game at +3.5 with one book and -2.5 with another after the line moves, and a final margin of exactly 3 wins both tickets. Those windows open because lines pile up around key numbers in the first place. The middling guide covers how to size and hunt them.

Key numbers FAQ

What are the key numbers in football betting?

In the NFL the main ones are 3 and 7, then 6, 10, 4, and 14. They are the final margins that happen most often because of how field goals and touchdowns add up. 3 is the most common by a wide margin.

Should I ever buy a half-point onto 3?

Only if the price is fair. Moving onto 3 or 7 buys the most valuable half-point on the board, but books charge a premium for it, often around -130 to move a -3.5 down to -3. Do the math before you pay.

Do key numbers matter in college football?

Less than in the NFL. College games run wider spreads and blowouts are common, so margins spread out and 3 and 7 carry a bit less weight. They still matter, just not as sharply.

The next time a line sits at 3, check which side you are getting before anything else. Key numbers in football betting reward the bettor who shops the price, and punish the one who does not.
