An over and an under can both lose when they count different minutes. The basketball odds NBA bettors compare need a matching scoring window before the prices mean anything. A ticket covering regulation and a ticket covering the final score can leave the same overtime game uncovered.
The NBA's 2026-27 regular season begins October 20. Before comparing opening-week lines, run through one settlement check: which points does each ticket count? The hypothetical examples below use made-up prices and scores to show the arithmetic, rather than quotes from a live betting board.
Basketball odds NBA bettors should match first
Start with the event and the exact bet. A moneyline selects the winner. A spread applies a points adjustment to the score. A total asks whether the combined scoring finishes above or below a stated number. Our guide to totals explains that last market in detail.
Then match the period. Write down full game, first half, second half or the named quarter. Check the overtime treatment beside it. Copy the line itself, including a half-point, before comparing the payout price.
For example, Over 215.5 and Under 215.5 describe opposite outcomes only when they use the same scoring window and compatible settlement rules. An Over 214.5 ticket introduces another difference. Keep each field visible instead of treating every selection under a game's heading as interchangeable.
A hypothetical pair that loses the entire stake
Suppose you put $100 on regulation-only Over 215.5 and $100 on full-game Under 215.5, with overtime included on the under. Assume each price is +110, meaning a winning $100 ticket returns $210 including its stake.
Regulation ends 102-102. The teams have scored 204 points, so the regulation over loses. Overtime takes the final score to 114-110. That's 224 points, so the full-game under loses too.
Total staked: $200. Total returned: $0.
The plus prices didn't fix the gap between the contracts. You had one bet that needed scoring before the regulation buzzer and another that needed scoring to stay low through the final buzzer. That combination allowed both tickets to fail.
Now change only the over's scope so both tickets include overtime. With the same hypothetical +110 prices and $100 stakes, one winning ticket returns $210 against $200 committed, leaving $10 before any fees or taxes. That is a 5% return on the combined stake, conditional on both bets being accepted and settled as specified.
Covering all outcomes through a price difference is called arbitrage. Our arbitrage percentage walkthrough explains the stake calculation. Matching rules comes before that calculation.
Check the quarter rule separately
Operator documents give a useful reason to slow down here. Betfair's US basketball rules exclude overtime from quarter markets and include it in second-half markets. Its player-performance rules also include overtime in final totals.
The bet365 US basketball rules contain a separate live-quarter section that includes overtime. They also say pre-game bets include overtime unless stated otherwise. A blanket assumption that every fourth-quarter ticket stops at regulation would miss that distinction.
These examples apply to the linked rule pages. Your account or jurisdiction may use different terms. Open the basketball rules available through your own sportsbook. Read the specific market subsection as well as the general rule. Save the wording if it affects your comparison, and ask support before staking when the description remains unclear.
For a hypothetical quarter example, assume the fourth quarter produces 48 combined points and overtime adds 20. Under 55.5 wins if its contract counts only that quarter's 48 points. It loses if its contract adds overtime and settles on 68. The identical number on the ticket can conceal that difference.
Props need the same scoring window too
A player points bet follows the same arithmetic. In a hypothetical game, a player has 23 points after regulation and adds four in overtime. Their final total becomes 27. A full-game Over 25.5 that includes overtime wins; a regulation-only Over 25.5 loses.
Check participation requirements alongside the time window. bet365's linked rules generally require the relevant player to be dressed and see court time for action, subject to stated exceptions. Its live-player rule has separate wording about a player who sees no further court time after the bet.
Keep points separate from points-plus-assists or other combined statistics. The player props guide covers the categories. For this check, write the complete statistic beside the player's name so a similar-looking selection cannot slip into the comparison.
Recheck the accepted tickets
Use this sequence before committing money:
- Match the event, market, scoring window and line on both selections.
- Read the applicable overtime, participation and cancellation rules.
- Check the current price and the stake each account will accept. A limit below the planned stake changes your exposure.
- After submission, verify each accepted ticket's price and amount. If one bet is rejected or the other price moves, recalculate before taking another action.
Keep a record of the market descriptions and accepted bets. Our line-shopping guide introduces comparing prices; the settlement check makes sure those prices belong together. A displayed opportunity can disappear before execution, and account restrictions can prevent the planned stakes.

Does every NBA quarter bet exclude overtime?
Check the operator and market. Betfair's linked rules exclude overtime from quarter markets, while bet365's linked US rules include it in their live-quarter section.
Can an over and an under both lose?
Yes. A regulation-only over can lose before overtime, while a full-game under on the same number can lose after extra scoring. Matching the number alone leaves that risk.
For the basketball odds NBA bettors compare next, keep the scoring window beside the price. Confirm what each ticket counts before deciding what to stake.
